Sykia
On the southeastern tip of the Sithonia peninsula, lies one of the oldest villages of Halkidiki, Sykia. With a population of over 3,000 inhabitants, it is 160 km from Thessaloniki (via Sarti).
The most common version of its name is the Shadow of the imposing Mount Athos that covers the village at sunrise.
The architecture of the village and especially of the old settlement has many elements in common with that of Mount Athos. The village’s relations with Mount Athos are very old, when there were metochia (monastery properties) in the area that supported the economies of the monasteries.
A sight to see is “Koukos”, a rocky and high hill surrounded by a castle and probably an important prehistoric settlement there.
The inhabitants of the village are engaged in fishing, livestock farming, beekeeping and tourism.
The area is full of wonderful beaches. Tristinika, Korakas, Kalamitsi, Kriaritsi, Marathias, Klimataria are some of them. All these wonderful beaches are located at the foot of Itamos, a mountain with several roads and paths that take you into its forest.
For the comfortable accommodation of visitors there are rooms to rent, camping, restaurants, bars, but above all the hospitality of the inhabitants of the area.
The "virginity" of the coast and nature, as well as the authenticity of its inhabitants, will offer you unforgettable holidays.
